ST. ANSGAR, IOWA — William R. Mathews, 83, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Aug. 8, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Hampton. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and one hour prior to services at the church.

ST. ANSGAR - William R. Matthews, 83, of St. Ansgar, died Friday, (Aug. 8, 2003) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Joe Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, and one hour prior to service time at the Church on Monday.

William Matthews was born on Feb. 5, 1920, in Middletown Springs, Vermont, the son of Lawrence W. and Ethel (Adams) Matthews. He graduated from Rutland (Vermont) High School, in the class of 1937.

He attended the University of Vermont for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1940. He served in the Medical Corps and transferred to the Signal Corps, being stationed for three years in London, England, as a specialist sergeant in cryptography. He followed the invasion into the continent with duties of monitoring enemy communications. After World War II, Bill graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Vermont.

He settled in St. Ansgar in 1950, and was employed by the St. Ansgar Enterprise until his retirement in 1985.

He married Jean A. McNie, also of St. Ansgar, on July 29, 1961. He was a 50-year member of the St. Ansgar Lion's Club, and a 50-year member of the American Legion. Bill served on the St. Ansgar Library Board, County Care Facility Board, Maple Manor Board, and was a member of the Board of Directors at the Good Samaritan Center He was an avid reader.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and one brother.

William Matthews is survived by his wife, Jean of St. Ansgar; a sister, Bonnie Bryant of Needham Mass.; a brother, Lawrence Matthews of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Ansgar Lion's Club for their Sight Saving Project.
