Darrell “Shorty” Sletten, age 65, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 7, at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott will officiate and interment will be in the Osage Cemetery, with Military Rites performed by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation is from 5-8:00 p.m., on Friday, April 6, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before the services at the church. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born on December 1, 1935, at the family home near Swaledale, Iowa, the son of Henry and Ruby (Cassel) Sletten. His family moved to near Brownville, Iowa in 1941, where he attended the Brownville Country School and graduated from the Little Cedar High School in 1955. He served in the United States Air Force as a radar operator from 1956 to 1958.

Darrell was united in marriage to Shirley Thompson on July 11, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In December of 1958, they moved to Brownville where they farmed on the family farm. In 1971 they moved to their current home south of Osage. For the past 30 years, Darrell was an over the road semi-truck driver.

He was a member of the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed camping and visiting with people.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Henry Sletten, Jr.; and one sister, Lucille During.

Those that survive him include his wife, Shirley Sletten of Osage; one son, Rick Sletten and wife, Suzanne of Osage and their children, Sarah, Mareah and Rebekah; two daughters, Cindy Niess and her husband, Vernon of Osage and their daughter, Tina who is attending Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and son, Joseph of Osage; Kathy Blake and her husband, David of Osage and their daughter, Stephanie who is attending Wartburg College in Waverly and son, Steven in Osage; one brother, Lyle Sletten and wife, Lee of Salt Lake City, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.
