Katherine W. Twomey, age 95, of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Osage, died on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Graveside services will be held today, Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at 1:30 p.m., at the Osage Cemetery. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.
She was born on May 27, 1905 in Osage, to Henry and Ethel Wilson. She attended school in Osage and graduated from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa in 1926. She taught several years at Washington Elementary. She was united in marriage to Charles J. Twomey, owner of the Osage newspaper known as the Osage News on June 21, 1929 in Osage.
In 1935, they moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where Charles operated the Hot Springs Star from 1935 to 1947. Following the death of her husband in 1987, Katherine moved to the Westhills Village, Rapid City in 1988.
A prolific writer, Katherine wrote numerous articles for various publications. A number of her stores and poems received awards at the Central State Fair and the South Dakota State Fair in Rapid City, South Dakota. She also wrote two books “A Gardeners Year”, published in 1972, and “Heartland Heritage”, published in 1992, which was her memoirs of growing up in Osage. She co-authored the book “Early Hot Springs” published in 1983.
She was a member of P.E.O., Traveler’s Club in Hot Springs, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution and the National League of American Pen Women.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Charles in 1987.
She is survived by two sons, Charles L. Twomey of Denver, Colorado and West W. Twomey of Aurora, Colorado.
