OSAGE, IOWA - Carolyn A. Hegland, age 70, of Osage died on Friday, January 30, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Auriela, Cherokee county, Iowa.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Carolyn was born on Oct. 13, 1938, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Rosina (Pierce) Grapp. She was adopted and raised by her aunt, Edna E. Pierce, in Waterloo, where she attended school and graduated from West High School in 1957. She attended the University of Iowa School of Nursing and became a LPN in 1958.

Carolyn was united in marriage to Duane W. Otto on June 9, 1961, in Waterloo. They moved to Auriela, Iowa, where he died in 1974. Carolyn was united in marriage to Glenn Hegland on July 22, 1979, in Mason City. They made their home in Osage. Glenn died in 2004.

Carolyn was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, where she held many local, district, and state offices. Carolyn was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with her grandchildren.

Carolyn is survived by her two daughters, DeAnn Malfero of Des Moines, and JoDee Otto of Orchard; her two sons, Dr. Michael Otto, D.D.S., of Mason City and Jeffery Otto; her daughter-in-law, Karen Oldenberg of Austin, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; three sisters, Lavern (Pete) Smith of Albuquerque, N.M., Audrey (Ross) Sinkey of Albuquerque, N.M., Darlys Voshell of Waterloo; one brother, John (Eleanor) Grapp of Albuquerque, New Mexico;

She was preceded in death by her parents; her adoptive mother, Edna; two husbands; a sister, Donna and a brother, William.
