Funeral services for Gertrude Womack were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with Rev. Ray Atwood officiating.
Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Pallbearers were: Robert Gansen, Randy and Bruce Grimm, Jesse Werner, Jerry Engelhardt Jr., and Scott Engelhardt. Honorary pallbearers were: Zach and Logan Hase. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Gertrude died Monday, May 19, 2003 at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville, where she has lived for almost two weeks.
Gertrude Mary Gansen was born May 22, 1918 in Howard County near Elma, the daughter of William J. and Elizabeth (Biwer) Gansen. She was baptized in her faith at St. Patrick's Church in St. Cecelia and attended the rural county schools. Following her education, she returned home to help her parents with the large family.
On February 15, 1938 she married James Womack in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma. They farmed in Howard County for a short period of time. They moved to Minnesota. Gert moved back to Charles City when Jim entered the service during WWII. In 1951, they moved into Riceville.
She was a homemaker and also a sales clerk for various businesses in Riceville.
She liked to fish, crochet, bowl, camp, and bake.
She is survived by her husband Jim; her children: Mary Elizabeth Wagner of Dysart, Shirley Jean Venz of St. James City, FL, and James Ambrose of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother: William of Lime Springs; and one sister: Ann Leibel of Venice, CA.
Gertrude was preceded in death by one granddaughter; and five brothers: Matt, Alphonsus, John, Phillip, and Lawrence.
