Verna LaFerne Thoresen, age 83, of Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, died on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2008, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Verna was born June 21, 1925, at New London, Iowa, the daughter of Sam and Ella (Grinstead) Puckett. She received her education at the community schools of Muscatine, Osage and Northwood, Iowa, and graduated from Mason City High School.

Verna married Howard Thoresen on June 2, 1946, at Mason City, Iowa. To this union, six children were born. While living on the Thoresen Brothers farm with her husband, Verna was primarily a homemaker and companion to her husband.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran, having been a Sunday School teacher for preschool several years, and she shared in the fellowship, study and service opportunities with the Rebecca Circle at Our Savior's. Verna was active in the Mitchell County Farm Bureau Women in the 1960's and 70's, serving in various offices. Her interests included sharing in family activities, gardening and canning vegetables, crochet and needlework, and other crafts.

Verna is survived by her children, Ann (Rodney) McKinney of Dougherty, Mary Cullen of Osage, Luther (Paula) Thoresen of Ruthven, David (Mary) Thoresen of Lake Wales, Florida, Ruth (Phil) Ward of Cedaredge, Colorado, and Paul (Chris) Thoresen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, Rhonda McKinney, Carol Cullen and Joe Cullen, Benjamin Thoresen, Jessica Thoresen and Alena Thoresen, Priya Thoresen, Shristi Thoresen and Jonathan Thoresen, and Rachel McGruder; and three great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Cullen, Cole Dent and Ethan Baker; a brother-in-law, Leonard Thoresen; and a sister-in-law, June Puckett.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; four brothers, William, Charles, Melvin and Francis Puckett; and a sister, Hazel Wallace.
