Vergie Brones, age 91, of St. Ansgar, Mitchell county, Iowa, died on Friday, April 25, 2008, in St. Ansgar at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, in St. Ansgar, with Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will be next to her husband at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Vergil "Vergie" Mabel Christensen was born in Forest City, Iowa on November 26, 1916, one of eight children born to Herman and Bertha Margaret (Lytzen) Christensen. Vergie met Stanley R. Brones, also of Forest City, and they were married on January 18, 1933; they recently celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary.

Vergie and Stan had one daughter, Jana who attended school in Osage, and now lives in Arizona with her husband and family. Vergie and Stan farmed the Brones farm near Forest City until 1936. At that time they moved to the St. Ansgar area and farmed until retirement in 1978 and moved into St. Ansgar. Vergie was on the ground floor when Amway products first became available for the public; she rose to a high position with the company's sales representatives before retiring from the company around 1980. Before and after retiring, they enjoyed traveling all over the United States including Hawaii where their grandson and his family lived for a couple of years. When their daughter Jan and her family moved to Arizona, they spent most winters in the Mesa area until just recently.

Vergie enjoyed family and friends, traveling, spending time and entertaining at their cabin at Lake Lizzie near Pine River, MN., and gardening. After retiring from farming, Stan joined Vergie in gardening and canning. Even as recently as last summer they put in a garden and canned Vergie's favorite spice pickles and beet pickles.

Vergie was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Herman Christensen; brothers Gene and Lee; sisters Phyllis, Leatrice, and Thelma; and most recently her beloved husband Stan, of 75 years, passed away on February 21, 2008.

Surviving is her daughter Jan and husband Morrie of Mesa, Arizona; grandson Jeff and wife Shawn, and great-grandchildren Cody and Deanna of Camp Verde, Ariz.; one brother Orsen of Cincinnati, Ohio, and one sister Aldyce Chris McEnany of Mesa, Ariz.
