Mason City, Iowa-- George E. Black, 78, of 511 South Monroe Court, Mason City, died on Monday, April 14, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 18, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City with Rev. Jon M. Seda, officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel. Inurnment will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the family in memory of George.

George was born June 6, 1929, in Stacyville, Iowa, the son of James Elmer and Bertha (Myrtle) Black. He attended Hamiltons College of Business before starting his own business, Black Plumbing and Heating in Mason City, in 1972, where he still managed to work until the time of his death. George married Dorothy (Clark) and to this union 6 children were born. George and Becky (Henchal) were married on September 13, 1986 in Gladstone, Missouri.

George was a very social person, who loved coffee breaks at the roundtable with his friends. He was a fan of stockcar racing, and loved to garden. George was a collector of many things, and liked to talk on the phone. His family was his passion, especially his grandchildren, with whom he loved to spend time. A past member of the North Iowa Fairground Board, George was also a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 405.

George is survived by his wife, Becky of Mason City, four daughters, Marge Dannen and her late husband Pete, Mason City, Marlys (Don) Smelter, Stewartville, MN, Debra (Robert) Lugar, Mason City, and Bobbi (Bruce) Hollowell, Liberty, MO, two sons, Terry (Jill) Black, Mason City, and Mark Black and his fiancée Heather Gillard of Mason City, his grandchildren, Echo (Steve) Cash, Dara Dannen, Kaci Dannen, Jorden 'Bud' Dannen, Lisa (Reiny) Yahnke, Sam Smelter and his fiancée Jessica, Molly (Jacob) Johnson, Cory Smelter, Dan Smelter, Ryan Lugar, Alissa Lugar, Emily Lugar and her fiancée Travis, Taylor Lugar, Cody Black, Garrett Black, Mackenzie Black, Brock Black, Courtney Black, Alexa Hollowell, Spencer Hollowell and Carmen (Eric) Miller, eight great- grandchildren, sister, Kathryn (Clem) Lovik, Mitchell, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Claude Black, his son-in-law Pete Dannen, and Dorothy Black.
