Funeral Services for Oscar Allen Erickson, 87, of Monona, Iowa, were held on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at the Leonard Funeral Home, Monona. The Rev. Allen Bidne officiated. Burial with military honors followed in the Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Iowa.
Oscar died Saturday, August 11, 2007, at Prairie Maison Care Center, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, following a brief illness.
Oscar Allen Erickson was born on September 21, 1919, at Centerville, South Dakota, to John and Anna (Sather) Erickson. At age six, after losing both parents, a brother and sister, Oscar and one younger brother and sister were placed in the Beloit Children's Home at Beloit, Iowa. At age 15, he was sent out to work and make a home with a family at Osage. After a few months, the Carl Hartwig family took him in and sent him to high school.
Following graduation in 1942, Oscar enlisted for four years with the United States Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific with three major campaigns. On January 9, 1945, Oscar was united in marriage to Fern Frese. To this union, two children were born.
Following discharge from the service, Oscar was County Treasurer of Mitchell County. Later he was employed by Carnation Farms in Linn and Clayton Counties and in 1973; he worked for Swiss Valley Farms as Fieldman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by three brothers, Engolf, Clarence and Jalmar; by four sisters, Dagney Davidson, Edna Andersen, Gudrun Anderson; and by baby sister in infancy.
Oscar is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fern Erickson, Monona; by two children, Karen (Bruce) Colby, Gladwater, Texas, and Wayne (Terri) Erickson, Cedar Rapids; by three grandchildren, Blair (Angeles) Colby and Brett (Danielle) Colby and Erin (Brent) Yakish; by two great-granddaughters, Ashlyn Yakish and Brady Colby; by one great-grandson, Christian Colby; one sister, Jenny Johnson, Fairbault, Minn., and by one brother, Edwin Erickson, Denver, Colorado.
