Graveside services will be held at a later date in Osage, Iowa, for J. Gladys Schmidt who died on Sunday August 12, 2007 at the age of 98.

Julia Gladys Van Etten was born January 7, 1909 in Independence, Iowa, to William and Julia (Brewer) Van Etten. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1930 and taught elementary grades in Mitchell, Iowa for 7 years.

She married Edward William Schmidt on February 19, 1936. The couple farmed near Mitchell, Iowa for 42 years until his death on April 16, 1984. During those years Gladys was active teaching Saturday and Sunday School and in the circles of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa. She was a leader for the Mitchell Melody Makers 4-H club for 10 years. She was a founding member of the U and I Women's Club and was active with the Farm Bureau Women.

In 1990 she sold the farm and moved to Bettendorf to be near her daughter. She was among the first residents of Palmer Hills Retirement Home and enjoyed her 17 years there.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her brothers, Amos and Ben, and by her husband Ed.

Gladys is survived by her daughter Dorothy, and her husband Steve Earp, of Bettendorf and by their three children: Chad and his wife Anna Earp and their children Adam and Austin of Davenport, Susan Earp of Davenport, and Jim and his wife Julie Earp and their son Owen of Lakeville, Minnesota; her son Bill and his wife Rae Ann of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and his three children Nathan Schmidt of St. Paul, Minnesota, Damon and his wife Jen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Laura Schmidt of Marshall, Minnesota.

Also surviving are former daughter-in-law Lorraine Schmidt of Marshall, Minnesota, brother-in-law Clifford Schmidt and his wife Lori of Camp Hill, Connecticut, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Schmidt of Osage, Iowa and Phyllis Schrock of Charles City, Iowa..

Gladys was truly an example of a life well lived with amazing grace and will be missed by all who knew her.
