AUSTIN, MINNESOTA -- The funeral for Walter Brandt will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Glenn Monson officiating. Burial will be in Immanual Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar, Iowa, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 1216 of Austin.

Mr. Brandt, 82, of 300 First Ave. N.W., a longtime area farmer, died Monday evening (Aug. 25, 1997) at Austin Medical Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1915, he attended Carpenter, Iowa, schools and as a young man traveled around the country working in several defense plants. In 1943 he moved to Austin and he and a brother owned and operated Brandt Construction, a masonry firm. For seven years he served in the Army with overseas duty during World War II and the Korean War. He farmed in rural Austin for many years before his retirement in 1983 and then farmed on the Richard Epley farm. He never married. Mr. Brandt was a charter member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a member of VFW Post 1216 of Austin. He enjoyed gardening, trips to northern Minnesota and fly-in fishing trips to Canada.

Survivors include a brother, Fred of Osage, Iowa. Five brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and an hour before the service Thursday at the church.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 28, 1997 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Austin, MN for Walter Brandt of 300 – 1st Avenue, Austin, Minnesota. The Reverend Glenn Monson officiated and interment was at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar, with military rites by the V.F.W. Post 1216 of Austin, Minnesota. Worlein Funeral Home, Austin, was in charge of arrangements. He died Monday, August 25, 1997

Walter was born February 6, 1915 to Nicholas and Barbara (Klouse) Brandt. He attended school at Carpenter, Iowa and traveled around the United States and worked at several plants when he was a young man. He served seven years in the Army during World War II and the Korean War and worked overseas.

He moved to Austin, Minnesota in 1943 and he and his brother went into the masonry business known as Brandt Construction. He also farmed for most of his life at R.R. #2 in Austin. He never married. Mr. Brandt retired in 1983. After retirement, he continued to farm on the Richard Epley farm. He also enjoyed trips to northern Minnestoa with his extended family. He also did fly-in fishing trips with his family and friends to Canada. He enjoyed gardening and giving the fruits of his harvest to friends and family. He was a charter member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and member of the V.F.W. Post 1216 in Austin, Minnesota.

Preceding him in death were his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Survivors include one brother, Fred and wife, Carla Brandt of Osage; a sister-in-law, Antonette Brandt of Osage; and a brother-in-law Hubert Smith of California; many nieces and nephews.
