Obituary-Clark
James Henry Clark was born in Gunthrop, England, June 4, 1825, and passed away October 22, 1916, at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 18 days.
Mr. Clark came to America with his uncle when he was 12 years old and lived in Livingston county, N.Y., for three years, coming to Winnebago county, Ill., in 1840. May 29, 1856, he was united in marriage to Mary Lucinda Short.
Fourteen children blessed this union, nine of whom are living, all being present at the funeral, except Mrs. Lizzie Douglass, of Kansas. The children living are: Mary L. Chaney, Edwin A., Robert L., Dennis J., Harriet L. Hall, Elsie A. Dodge, Lizzie M. Douglass, Laura L. Williams, and Amy P. Sweet. There were twenty-seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs Clark came to Mitchell county in 1858, and settled on the farm purchased of the government, and on which he lived until his death.
They were among the earliest settlers of East Lincoln township and among the most progressive, always interested and ready to help in promoting that best for the good of the community in which they lived. Mr. Clark was held in high esteem as was evidenced by the large throng of neighbors and friends who gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by F. S. Artz. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot at Orchard.
