Funeral services for Vernon Heckstein, age 72, of Osage, Iowa, will held on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at the First Baptist Church in Osage, with Rev. Douglas Brown and the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating.

Burial will be in the Osage city Cemetery, with Military Rites at the grave by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Vernon died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Olmsted county, Minnesota.

Vernon was born August 17, 1933, near Mitchell, the son of Frank and Alice (Jones) Heckstein. He attended schools in Mitchell and graduated from Osage High School in 1951. Vernon served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He was united in marriage to Sandra Krones on February 8, 1958, at the First Baptist Church in Osage. Vernon farmed the family farm near Mitchell and he drove truck for various trucking companies, most recently for Condon Brothers Trucking, retiring in 1995. Vernon was a life member of the American Legion, and a 50 year member of Osage American Legion Post 278, where he had served as the Post Commander. He was a 4th District American Legion Commander and a past State Vice Commander of the American Legion for the state of Iowa. Vernon was also a life member of Osage V.F.W. Post 7920 and had served as the Post Commander. Vernon and Sandra had enjoyed wintering the last 10 years in Harlingen, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Kevin and Kenneth.

Vernon is survived by his wife Sandra, of Osage; a daughter, Kris (Bill) Huebsch, of Osage and their sons, Josh, Nick, and Billy; a son, Keith (Karen) Heckstein, of Osage and their children, Kaleb, Kelly, Kimberly and Kraig; a daughter-in-law, Sherri Heckstein, of Decorah, Iowa and her children, Kory Heckstein, of Cresco, Jenny (Brian) Hermanson, of Waukon and their children, Kreyton, Marissa, and Ainsley.

Arrangements were made by Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home of Osage, Iowa -- (641) 732-3706.
