EMIL GUSTAV NELSON RITES TODAY - CAME TO THIS COMMUNITY IN 1877 AND HAS RESIDED HERE SINCE
Rites will be conducted this afternoon for Emil Gustav Nelson, 61, who died of cancer at his home near Otranto Sunday morning. Services will be held at the home at 1:15 and at the First Lutheran church at 2 p.m. with Rev. O. A. Langehough in charge.
The son of Mathias and Johanna Nelson, Emil Gustave Nelson was born in Biridalen, Norway in 1874. He was baptized in the Lutheran church there. In 1877 he emigrated with his parents to the United States, the family settling south of St. Ansgar, Iowa.
He was confirmed in the First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar by Rev. John Olsen. He was married to Mathilda Ask at the Rock Creek church on June 4, 1899. To this union eight children were born, two of whom died in infancy.
Those surviving are: his wife and 6 children: Olga Hewitt, Mason City; Lula Gunderson, St. Ansgar; Minerva Hanson, Otranto; Esther Wamstad, Nora Springs; Laura, at Osage and Earl at home. Two sisters, Mrs. William Seaver, St. Ansgar and Mrs. Anna Fawver, Austin, MN and one brother Antone Nelson, also survive.
Pall bearers are Chris Goplerud, Andrew Hansen, Fred Brandt, Fred Priem, Peter Hansen and Dave Ramsey. Burial will be made in cemetery south of town.
