LEWIS CLARENCE MOE DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS - IDENTIFIED WITH ST. ANSGAR BUSINESS INTERESTS FOR HALF CENTURY
The St. Ansgar, Iowa Enterprise regrets having to chronicle this week the passing of Lewis C. Moe, whose entire life has been identified with the St. Ansgar community.
Mr. Moe died at the New Asbury hospital, Minneapolis, Monday morning, January 5th at 9:30 o'clock. He was taken sick just before Thanksgiving and went to Jordan, MN for treatment, thinking that his affliction was rheumatism. On Dec. 19th he was removed to the hospital in Minneapolis. A diagnosis showed a tumor on the spine and the case did seem hopeless. In a last effort to save his life, an operation was attempted Monday morning, but he did not rally from this.
Lewis Clarence Moe, youngest son of Lars and Caroline Moe, was born at St. Ansgar, Iowa on October 3, 1869, and died January 5, 1921, aged 61 years, 3 months and 2 days.
Lewis Moe attended the public schools of St. Ansgar and, as a boy and young man, worked for a few years with his brother, Martin Moe, in the printing office of the St. Ansgar Enterprise. After this he was in the tin and hardware business in St. Ansgar for 25 years. For the past 10 years, he has conducted the St. Ansgar Opera House.
He was married to Hattie Camp, daughter of Mr & Mrs A. Camp in 1894.
Mr. Moe was one of the best known citizens of St. Ansgar. He was a friendly man. He liked to visit with every one and was especially fond of children.
Mr. Moe is survived by his two sons, Alonzo, an attorney, of Mason City and Luverne, of Chicago. Another son, Merrill, died in 1918. Three brothers and three sisters survive also: Martin, Sam, Anne and Mrs. Julia Lange of St. Ansgar; Andrew of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Amelia Thorson of St. Ansgar. A brother, George passed away in infancy and a sister, Revina in 1876. Lewis was the youngest of the family. There has been no death in his father's family for 54 years.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. Moore of St. Ansgar and Rev. William Galbreth of Mason City.
