KNAPP

Mr. Edward Augustus Knapp was born at Moores, Clinton county, New York, May 22, 1837. When he was 8 years of age he moved, with his folks to Winnebago Co., Wis., where he worked on his fathers farm and attended public school during his boyhood. He then helped his brother in the lumber business until the breaking out of the Civil war. He enlisted in Company 5, Minnesota Volunteers in February, 1862, and served three years and came out a Lieutenant. He then re-enlisted and served until the close of the war.

After the close of the war he took up farming in Burr Oak township of this county and has lived in this community ever since.

While in the army Mr. Knapp contracted a disease that clung to him and tightened its grip as he advanced in years. About two years ago he became so weak that he could no longer keep about his work and since that time he has not been able to get out from his home, only by spells of short duration.

He gradually grew weaker until about a week ago he became entirely prostrated and remained unconscious most of the time until his death Saturday morning at 9 o’clock.

Mr. Knapp was well and favorably known throughout the county. Among his immediate neighbors and friends he was held in high esteem, being a man of sterling quality, ever ready to help a neighbor in a time of need. His patriotism was unbounded, being willing at all times to take up arms in defense of his country.
He believed in the saying of the old prophet, “To do justice, love and mercy and keep yourself unspotted before the world.”

He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss, three of them are married, Mrs. R. G. Cooper, Mrs.Henderson and Earl E. Knapp; the other three, Earnest, Fred, Lena, remain at home to comfort the mourning widow.
