ELIZABETH DOYLE SHIPHERD

Born April 3, 1835
Died August 30, 1914

Elizabeth Doyle Shipherd, daughter of William and May Doyle, was born in Walton, Novia Scotia, April 3, 1835.

She was the second child in a family of three brothers and five sisters, three of whom, Stephen T. Doyle of Riceville, Mrs. Agnes Greeley of Riceville and Mrs. N. J. Moss of Hollywood, Calif., survive her. Afer a common school education, Miss Doyle moved with her parents to Portland, Maine, where they enjoyed a six years residence.

In 1857 the family moved west to Osage. She met E. P. Shipherd and on March 15, 1860, was married to him, the wedding ceremony taking place in Chicago. The couple returned to this place about a year later and lived together here until Aug. 16, 1913, when Mr. Shipherd passed away. Three children were born to this union, Mary Esther, Edward, now of Carson, Wash., and Frank L., now of Denver, Colo. These survive to mourn her loss, together with seven grandchildren and one great grand-child.

It is not needful that any extended eulogy be here given. Mrs. Shipherd has lived a blameless life in this community for more than half a century and has been loved by her friends, the majority of whom had gone on before her. She united with the Congregational church here twenty-nine years ago. Though never an aggressive member, she was always quietly in the spirit of her Master and the interests of his kingdom. During most of these years she has been a member of the Ladies Missionary Society, where she showed her sympathy with the Redeemer’s world purposes.

Her life naturally devoted itself to the home. Here she has been an ideal wife and mother. During recent years, when the children had gone and she was alone with her husband, the relationship between the two became beautifully tender, and during the past year since Mr. Shipherd’s death the most pathetic feature of her otherwise very pathetic case has been the continual calling for him.

Mrs. Shipherd’s passing occurred Sunday while the services of her church were in progress. Her funeral was held from her late residence Tuesday at 2 p.m., her pastor, Rev. H. O. Allen, officiating in the presence of many relatives and friends.
