William J. Smith, 1861-1951

W. J. Smith, 89,
Buried in Osage Wednesday

Funeral services for William J. Smith, 89, who died Saturday at the Berry nursing home in Osage, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Champion funeral home with the Rev. Orville Meliquist officiating. Burial was in the Osage cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born on October 3, 1861, in Dane County, Wisconsin, the son of Thomas and Anna Smith. He lived a short time in Lake City, Minn., and came to Mitchell county with his parents when he was 11 years old. He spent the rest of his life here.

On October 3, 1890, he was married to Clarissa Rice, who died in 1911. One child, Mrs. Olive Lindeman, also preceded him in death as did five sisters.

Mr. Smith spent most of his boyhood around Mitchell, where his family lived on a small farm.

He later became a farmer and also was employed by the late Dr. M. A. Hansen of Osage for many years.
