Clarissa N. Rice was born near Osage, Iowa, on June 13, 1866 and died at her home in Osage on September 19, 1911 -- age 45 years, 3 months, and 6 days.
Her early life was spent on a farm two miles north of Osage until at the age of twenty, she moved with her father's family to town.
On October 12, 1890, she was united in marriage to William J. Smith, to this union was born one child, Olive A., who with a devoted husband is left to mourn the loss of a beloved wife and mother. Also a niece Edith Fritzell, who she has raised and given a mother's love. She leaves four sisters, Mrs. Martha Fessenden, of Columbia, South Dakota, Mrs. Georgia Howard, of Douglas, Wyoming, Mrs. Lucretia Counsell and Mrs. Blanch Madison of Osage and four brothers, Ammon and Charles of Douglas, Wyoming, John of Elma and Arthur at Osage.
When at the age of eighteen she united with the Baptist church to which faith she has always clung being a faithful worker and always in attendance until the last few weeks when health would not permit her and although it was a sacred one to her, each day was kept in accordance with it, and as a result made the beautiful character which she had. Her home was what she made it and although she is now gone and her place can never be filled her life will be taken as an example, which those left will endeavor to follow.
The esteem in which she was held need not be spoken of, for deeds not words can tell, her helping hand was ever ready in time of need with neighbors and friends as well as loved ones. For the past eight weeks she has been in poor health but on Tuesday morning she was taken seriously ill.
All that loving hands and medical skill could do was done but alas God knew best and at 7:20 after fond goodbyes to the loved ones her tired spirit took its flight to receive its well earned Heaven.
The service was held Thursday the 21st at the home in the fourth ward. After which the body was tenderly laid at rest in the Osage cemetery.
