Obituary:

Lanita Marie (Hansen) Koster was born February 9, 1930, to Arthur and Marie (Denning) Hansen, in Mitchell County, on the Hansen family farm.

She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

She attended Spring Valley Rural School and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in the Class of 1947.

Lanita was united in marriage to Darwin G. Koster on May 1, 1949.

Their children are: Kathy (Roger) Chancellor and their children; Kristine Fischer and Tara Stassen; James (Ellen) Koster and their children; Jennifer Fox, Kari Geiger, Amy Hedrich, and Mary Schuh; Lori (Tony) Mayer and their children; Heather Nielsen, Ryan Mayer, and John Mayer; Kevin (Kristie) Koster and their children; Kalyn Koster, Kody Koster, Kray Koster.

Lanita was a dedicated wife to her husband for over 50 years in farming the Koster family farm. Her many farm duties included driving the tractor, picking corn with a two-row cornpicker, tending the baby chicks, mothering the newborn lambs, and was in charge of keeping the men fed while out in the fields. She never let anyone go hungry. She would not take “No” for an answer.

She worked as a cashier for the St. Ansgar Cedar Valley Electric, held various job positions for 13 ½ years at the Good Samaritan Center. Lanita served as administrator of the Mitchell County Care Facility for 6 ½ years. She always said she was put there to help set those people free.

She had a deep desire in her heart to help serve a gentleman in our community who needed a caretaker. That one man’s need, motivated her, along with her husband to establish the Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar, that served over 100 local residents and their families for 20 years.

She enjoyed family vacations up North camping, fishing and hunting, playing 500 and bridge with the local gals and cribbage with Dad. She loved watching her iris’ and other flowers bloom throughout the Spring and Summer months. She was involved in the St. Ansgar Garden Club.

She loved her family and always made them aware of how blessed she was. The annual family gatherings at the farm orchard over Labor Day weekend was something she really looked forward to She always furnished the coffee and you could find her peeling the potatoes for the Sunday campfire stew that everyone enjoyed.

She was a women with great faith and prayer and was dedicated to the Lord. She read her Bible faithfully and journaled about her relationship with Christ and what she had learned from Him that day. One of her favorite things she looked forward to each week was hosting a Women’s bible Study in her home. The coffee was always on and she always had a sweet treat for everyone.

Mom will be remembered being devoted to living her life to the fullest, sharing love in serving others, with her warm smile and hugs, special Birthday phone calls, and generosity.

Left to cherish her memory are her: children; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sister, Leora Stromley of St. Ansgar; brother Duane Hansen of Fredricksburg, Virginia; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her: parents; husband, Darwin; brother, Dean; son-in-law, Roger; 3 sister-in-laws; 5 brother-in-laws and nieces and nephews.
