St. Ansgar, Iowa – LaVerne E. Nelson, died on July 11, 2020 at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, Stacyville.
Funeral service will be on Thursday, July 16, 2020 at the St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar.
LaVerne Ernest Nelson was born on November 11, 1927, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to Ernest and Laura (Hackbarth) Nelson. He was baptized, confirmed, and a life-long member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.
LaVerne was a resident of Mitchell County, Iowa, his entire life. LaVerne was an army veteran. During the summer of 1956, LaVerne met Grace Duncomb and she became his wife the following year on June 2, 1957. They made their home on a farm near St. Ansgar and were blessed with three sons, Kenneth, Russell, and Alan.
LaVerne was active and enjoyed many things during his 92 years. Farming was his passion his entire life. He took his family on many memorable trips. He and Grace continued to travel and appreciated the beauty of our country. Together they spent many winters in Gulf Shore, Alabama. LaVerne was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his fishing buddies. He taught all of his grandkids how to fish and how to play cribbage and therefore spent many hours together doing so.
LaVerne is Dad to Kenneth and Karen Nelson; Russell and Kari Nelson; and Alan and Sheryl Nelson. He is Grandpa to Joshua and Sarah Nelson and their children Liv and Kyla; Lucas and Deneen Nelson and their children Gram, Genevieve, and Garrett; Jordan and Savannah Nelson, and Gayle Nelson; Jacob Nelson, Maria Nelson, and Leah Nelson.
LaVerne is also survived by his sister, Neva Lunn; and by extended family.
LaVerne is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Grace; his parents; and by his brother Sanford.
He shared his strong faith with his family who now find comfort in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior.
