Marlene L. Yost
July 31, 1934 ~ May 21, 2019 (age 84)
Marlene Lois Yost, age 84, died on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 in Samaritan Bethany, a caring and loving nursing home in Rochester, Minnesota.
She was born July 31, 1934 on a farm near St. Ansgar, Iowa to Alvin and Josephine Ruechel as the youngest of three children. Marlene played some “classic” half-court Iowa girls’ basketball growing up and studied music diligently throughout her youth. She was the valedictorian of Carpenter High School graduating class of 1952. Upon graduation, she became a traveling professional musician with Parkinson’s National Music Ensemble.
Marlene met Darold Yost on a blind date, and the two were married on September 6, 1953. They had four children. The family moved often following Darold’s career as a school administrator, and wherever they landed, Marlene served as the church organist, choir director, or both.
They eventually moved to Le Roy, Minnesota, in 1968, where Darold was the School Superintendent and Marlene played organ and directed the choir at Le Roy Lutheran Church for many years. They resided in Le Roy until 2015.
Marlene was preceded in death by her son, Neil, her mother, father, sister and brother.
She is survived by her husband Darold, her daughter Jolene (Alan) Hansen, and sons Doug (Julie) and Roger (Alicia) Yost, daughter-in-law, Julie Yost-Minnich, and grandchildren Lindsey (Daryl) Scurlock, Stuart (Jill) Hansen, Jamie (David) Kim, Jessie (Michael) Bergman, Andy Yost, Ethan Yost, Tony Yost, Nick Yost and eleven great-grandchildren.
Marlene will be warmly remembered as a church music leader, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Funeral services will be on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Le Roy Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends at 9:30 AM until the time of service, and burial will follow at the Le Roy Cemetery. The Yost family would like to extend our gratitude to St. Mary’s Hospital, Seasons Hospice and especially Samaritan Bethany Nursing Home for their attentiveness and loving care. Additionally, the family requests memorials be given to Le Roy Lutheran Church or another charity of choice.
