Wayland “Jave” Savre, loving father and husband, passed away after a long and adventure filled life on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at home in Houston, Texas, at the age of 92. He has been described by those who knew him as a genuinely good and kind man.
Wayland was born on July 16, 1926, in Osage, Iowa, to Clarence and Opal Savre. He attended and graduated from Osage High School during which time he was involved in scouting. He was very proud to achieve the level of Eagle Scout before he graduated.
He enlisted in the Navy out of high school and attended Wright Junior College to become a radio technician which is the duty he performed aboard the ship the “Fremont” during World War II. After serving two years in the Navy, he attended the University of Iowa where he obtained a Masters in Geology.
It was during this time that he met Helen at a tea dance. They were married while he worked towards his masters and spent three months camping in the Black Hills while he wrote his thesis. After his graduation Wayland began to work for Gulf Oil Company in West Texas where they lived for eight years before moving overseas. For the next five years the family lived in Kuwait, Mozambique, and Angola. Wayland was able in indulge in one of his many interests: scuba diving, while living overseas.
After five years he was transferred by Gulf back to the United States to Houston where he and his family lived for the next 50 years. Wayland took early retirement and was able to spend his free time riding motorcycles, scuba diving and flying his glider. He made many lifelong friends in the Houston Underwater Club and the Soaring Club of Houston. He and Helen also traveled extensively around the world during this time as well.
Wayland is survived by his daughter Debra and her husband Douglas, his son Steven and his wife Annette, and his grandson Thomas and his wife Megan.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2019, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, followed by a graveside service at the Osage Cemetery.
