Mervel "Duke" Angell
Mervel “Duke” Angell, age 91, of Osage, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the Faith Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2018, at the United Church of Christ in Osage with Pastor Charles Owens officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Other names he’s been called are: Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Merv, Brover-Doll (by his Mom) but he’s best known as Duke.
He was the son of Merlyn and Alma (Loney) Angell and was born October 4, 1926, on a farm eight miles north east of Osage, which was settled by his great-grandparents, and it became a century farm in 1957. He went to school for eight years at Burr Oak #1 and then high school in Osage and graduated from Osage Community High School in 1944; in his senior year, he was the state wrestling champion at 129 lbs.
Duke was united in marriage to Patricia Schulz on June 22, 1952, at the Osage Lutheran Church, to this union five children were born, Merrill, Marsha, Mark, Kathy and Laurie; they later divorced. After high school, he farmed with his dad for 12 years and then was a Mitchell County Deputy to Sheriff Harry Horn for two years and then was elected to be the Mitchell County Sheriff from 1958 – 1964. Duke also worked for the Osage Police Department and then he owned and operated the Plaza Café and Lantern Supper Club in Osage.
He then worked in sales with farm related products for 21 years, before he retired in 1988. He was a member of the United Church of Christ for 75 years where he served on various boards and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Duke enjoyed high school sports, especially wrestling, Iowa Hawkeye Wrestling, playing cards, cribbage, golfing, boating and small woodworking projects. His biggest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
Duke is survived by his children, Merrill (Rose) Angell of Osage, Marsha (Radar) Milton of Little Cedar, Mark Angell of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kathy (John) Sink of Tucson, Arizona; nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen (Helen) Angell of New Hampton and Keith (Carmen) Angell of North Liberty.
Duke was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Laurie Angell in 1965.
