U.S. Veteran
Carroll S. Bishop, age 85, of Osage, Iowa, died Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Osage Alliance Church in Osage, with Pastor Jim Stern officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, rural Rudd, with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Carroll was born May 23, 1932, on a farm near Nora Springs, Iowa, to Sereno Eli and Gladys Elizabeth (Allen) Bishop. His parents moved to the farm north of Rudd in 1938. Carroll graduated from Rudd High School in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 through 1954. While in Korea, Carroll serviced and guarded diesel-powered water pumping stations and sometimes guarded Chinese prisoners of war.
He married Joyce Irene Nauman on June 27, 1954, at Rudd Wesleyan Church. Carroll and Joyce farmed for over 50 years, milking cows and raising hogs; first, north of Floyd, then moving west of Osage in 1964. He was always active in his church, serving on the boards of the Rudd Wesleyan Church, and then on the board of the Osage Alliance Church as treasurer for 14 years.
Carroll had a great love for his wife of 62 years, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his favorite grand puppy. He was a collector of belt buckles and unique rocks. The samples of each exceeded several hundred. Belt buckles filled his walls and rocks filled his gardens.
Carroll is survived by son, Merlin (Judy) Bishop of Rudd, son, Daniel (Teri) Bishop of St. Ansgar, daughter, Sheryl “Sherrie” (Allan) Olson of Osage, and daughter, Starla (Doug) Cassmann of Osage; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Nauman of Osage, Marlise Adams of Floyd, and Esther Owczarek of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce Bishop in 2016; great-grandson, Brody Collins; and siblings, Robert Bishop, Betty Waters, Ruth Waters and David Bishop.
