The daughter of Arthur and Lillie (Knop) Hollatz, Darlene Grace Hollatz was born on her parents' farm near Clear Lake, Iowa, on December 11, 1927. She was baptized at home on February 12, 1928, and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Garner on April 6, 1941. Darlene attended grade school at a one-room country school near her home and graduated from Ventura Consolidated High School in 1945. After graduating from Hamilton Business College in Mason City in 1946, she worked in the business office at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Mason City until the fall of 1950.

Darlene met Robert “Bob” Jacot at the Surf in Clear Lake in 1946, and they were married at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Garner, on October 7, 1949. In March 1951 they moved to a farm southeast of Carpenter where they worked together crop farming and raising hogs. Bob and Darlene are the parents of two daughters – Janice and Carol. Although retiring from raising hogs in 1979 and from crop farming in 1987, they continued to live on the farm until moving to St. Ansgar in 2012.

Bob and Darlene have been members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar since 1951. They helped organize the church's Friendship Club. Darlene taught Sunday School for several years and was a member of and held several offices in Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She and Bob spent several winters in Mesa, Arizona. Before losing her vision, her hobbies included driving tractors, traveling, and making crafts.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and husband Robert.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Janice (David) Luhrs, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Carol (Norman) Pahl, St. Ansgar; six grandchildren: Karl (Melissa) Luhrs, Ryan (Sarah) Luhrs, Karla (Jay) Doty, Laura Pahl, Genean (Jon) Bohl, and Jonathan Pahl; seven great-grandchildren: David Luhrs, Samuel Luhrs, Cole Doty, Brendan Doty, Lauren Doty, Daniel Bohl, and Kimberly Bohl; one sister, Norma Jean (Daryl) Gobeli, Mason City; one sister-in-law Lola Yelland, Sheffield; and several nieces and nephews.
