Loreene Mae Schrag

July 22, 1928 - February 6, 2018

Loreene Mae Schrag, age 89 of Carpenter, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Mercy Medical Hospital in Mason City, Iowa.

Loreene was born July 22, 1928, in Freeman, South Dakota, to Emil and Martha (Gran) Graber. She grew up and attended school in Freeman, South Dakota, and graduated from Freeman High School in 1946. In October of 1946, Loreene entered a state-wide competition with twenty-five other girls and was chosen the 'Queen of the 3rd Annual Baseball Pheastival' held in Huron, South Dakota.
She was awarded a trip to Hollywood for five days, a mink stole and a complete wardrobe. On July 20, 1947, Loreene was united in marriage to Clarence Glen Schrag at the Salem Mennonite Church in Freeman. This union was blessed with three boys.

After they were married, they farmed in South Dakota and lived on the family farm. In 1960, the family moved to Carpenter, IA. They ran the C&L Grocery Store for twenty plus years. Loreene worked various jobs and was involved in different activities in Carpenter. She was an active member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, WELCA, loved puzzles, bowling, playing cards, reading books and reading her bible and devotions. She was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan. She loved watching all kinds of sports. Loreene loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Loreene loved her role as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and homemaker.

Survivors include her three son: Barry Schrag, Carpenter, IA; Tommy (Nancy) Schrag, Champlin, MN; and Scott (Melody) Schrag, St. Ansgar, IA. Six grandchildren: Michelle (Greg) Schmitt of Spring Valley, WI; Gregory Schrag of Elmwood, WI; Brandon (Nikita Choate) Schrag of Colorado Springs, CO; Alexander Schrag of Spring Valley, WI; Adam (Lisa-Marie) Schrag of Ramsey, MN; and Spencer Schrag of New Brighton, MN. Eight great-grandchildren: Maxwell, William and Samuel Schmitt of Spring Valley, WI; Ja'Vion Choate and Zoey Schrag of Colorado Springs, CO; Ava and Livia Schrag of Ramsey, MN; Harlan Schrag of Spring Valley, WI; and many special nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. A special thank you to nieces, Marcia Prestegaard and Judy Olson. She was preceded in death by her parents Emil and Martha (Gran) Graber; her husband, Clarence Glenn Schrag; brothers, Kermit and Duane Graber; sisters Adella (aka Jerry) Koster, Bernice Prestegaard, and Donna Brandsted; sister-in-laws, Alice Graber and Josephine Graber; brother-in-laws, Al Koster, Juel Prestegaard, and Dick Brandsted. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed be her memory!

Funeral service will be on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa, with Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial will be in the Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 4:30 to 7:00 at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
