Verna Mae Turnmire, age 98, of Osage, died Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Julie Schubert officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery in Osage. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
Verna Mae Turnmire was born June 20, 1918, in Madison County, Iowa, the daughter of Ellis and Golda (Beaman) Estell. She received her education in the rural one-room schools of Madison County and graduated from Winterset High School in 1936.
She attended business college in Des Moines and worked for several years as a legal secretary in Des Moines. Verna was united in marriage to William E. Turnmire on September 2, 1945, at her parents’ home by Rev. W.A. Samo pastor of Winterset Methodist Church. They lived in Boston, Massachusetts until Mr. Turnmire was discharged from service in the Army.
Since that time, she has resided in Osage and her later years were filled with traveling and spending winters in Texas. One of her most memorable travels was her trip to the Holy Land in Israel in 1994 and coming back through England and attending church at Westminster Abbey.
Verna was baptized at an early age at Winterset Methodist Church and has been a member of the First United Methodist Church ever since coming to Osage. She was charter member of WSCS now the Osage Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary and also the V.F.W Auxiliary. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. Her greatest joy in her life were her two children. Karen and Bill.
Verna is survived by her daughter Karen Turnmire of Clearwater, Florida; her son Bill (Robin) Turnmire of Clinton, Washington; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Verna is preceded by her parents; her husband, Bill in 1991; four sisters, Helen (Robert) Alexander, Bonnelle (Charlie) Heubrock, Thelma (Emrov) Klingaman, Doris (Loren) Goode; and her only brother, Wayne (Lois) Estell.
