ST. ANSGAR — Marian L. Borcherding, 102, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Marion Louise Borcherding, 102, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be at St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

OBITUARY--Marion Louise Borcherding
Marian was born August 28, 1913 in Glidden Township, Carroll County, Iowa the fifth child of Herman and Anna (Berner) Borcherding. She was baptized September 21, 1913 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Carroll Township, Iowa. She was confirmed May 20, 1928 at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glidden, Iowa. After attending Riedesel Country School and then Jasper No. 9 for the final two years, she received her Public School Diploma from Carroll County May 19, 1927.
Marian went on to high school in Glidden, graduating May 28, 1931 from Glidden High School. She then attended The Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls from June through August 1931 where she received her Teaching Certificate. Marian continued to take classes and eventually received her Associate of Arts Degree from Mason City Junior College July 15, 1955.
Marian immediately began her teaching career in her home school, Japer No. 9, where she taught until 1937. The rest of the family had moved to Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa in the spring of 1934. Marian joined them on the family farm and began teaching at Deer Creek No. 3 where she taught until 1948. She was elected President of the Worth County Rural Teachers in Northwood, September 2, 1942.
Marian was hired by the St. Ansgar School District in 1948 to teach 5th grade. The following year she switched to 2nd grade where she taught until May 1978 when she retired after teaching for 47 years.
Marian lived on the family farm with her mother Anna and brother Richard from 1937 to 1969. She was a member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, where she had been a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher and a Luther League Advisor. She also served on the Care Review Board and Advisory Board at the Good Samaritan Center. The family bought a house and moved to St. Ansgar in 1969. Marian moved into an apartment a few years after her mother died in 1983 and lived there on her own until she celebrated her 100th birthday. She then moved to the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar where she spent the last two years.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Herman and Anna; brothers, Richard and Alvy; sisters, Florence and Viola; brother in law, Maynard Johnson; sister in laws, Florence and Dallas; niece, Ruth Ann; great nephew, Cody.
Marian is survived by her brother, Raymond of St. Ansgar; four nephews, Donal (Patricia) of Rochester, Mn., Ronald (Kathy) of Waseca, Mn., Michael(Janet) of St. Ansgar, Marvin (Sheri) of Mason City, Ia.; two nieces, Marsha (Stephen) Burd of Saugatuck, Michigan and Linda (Larry) Bol of Valparaiso, Indiana. Marian’s family also includes; 17 great nieces and nephews; 17 great-great-nieces and nephews; and of course hundreds of students that she taught in St. Ansgar and all the country schools.
Marian dearly loved spending time attending school and other activities in which members of the family took part and never missed an opportunity to bake her famous Sugar Cookies and bring them to family gatherings. She will be missed by all!
