Mrs. Helene Bergum, 88, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ole Olson, of Mitchell. She was born June 28, 1855, on a farm called Bondele in Nordsinnen, Northland, Norway, and moved with her parents to Ostsinne, Northland, Norway, when two years of age. There she grew to womanhood and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.
She married Christ Bergum in November, 1878, and came to America, April 25, 1885. Eleven children were born to this union.
Her husband and three children preceded her in death. One girl died in infancy in Norway; a son, John, died in Wisconsin several years ago; and a daughter, Mrs. Glenn Benson, of Gratiot, Wisconsin, died in 1918. Her husband died in December of 1912.
Mrs. Bergum spent most of her life at Bode, Iowa, but moved to Livermore in 1912. She later kept house for Soren Larson at Freeborn, Minnesota. Her later years were spent with her children, the last three with her daughter at Mitchell.
Mrs. Bergum leaves to mourn her passing, eight children: Ole of Holstein, Iowa; Hansine (Mrs. Ole Bondele), of Gratiot, Wisconsin; Iver, of Bancroft, Iowa; Karen, (Mrs. Ole Olson) of Mitchell, Iowa; Martin of Livermore, Iowa; Olefine (Mrs. Ben Wisford) of Springer, New Mexico; Tilla (Mrs. Clarence Erickson) of South Wayne, Wisconsin; and Elmer, of Detroit, Michigan. she is also survived by 38 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A prayer service was held after which the body was taken to Bode where Rev. T.P. Solem of the Osage Lutheran Church conducted the services. Burial was in the family lot in the Bode Cemetery.
