Russell was born November 22, 1930, to George and Anna (White) Rosenberg. He was baptized at the family farm. He was confirmed on April 14, 1946, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa, by Pastor Seegers. He was a member of St. John’s for many years. He was in the choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent as well as on Church Council.
Russell graduated from the Newburg #Five County School in 1943 and received his diploma in Osage, Iowa, at the Seminary building. He started working for Great Western, Milwaukee and Rock Island Rail Road in 1945, from depots from Manly to Bolan to Lyle and remembered each and every depot agent's name while on the crew. He also worked for the Sugar Beet Plant in Mason City.
On March 7, 1954, he married Kathryn Trettin at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. He was honorably discharged from the US Army, then worked on the family farm and drove school bus for St. Ansgar Community Schools. He was employed at Massey Ferguson Sales as Parts Manager in Osage, IA, and served as church custodian and cemetery groundskeeper. Russell owned and operated Russ’s Standard and Rosenberg Lawn Care in St. Ansgar. Later working for J & J Auctions then with Fox Auction Service.
Relay for Life was very special to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ray Rosenberg Sr., nephew Ray Rosenberg, Jr, and niece Deb (Rosenberg) White, and his grandson Spenser Gruis’s fiancée Amy Hild.
Russell is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathy; sons, Russell Rosenberg, Jr. of Branson, Missouri; Ron (Carole) Rosenberg of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and a daughter, Cheryl (Scott) Gruis, of Rockford, Iowa; by 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and very good friends.
Special thank you to Ricky Rosenberg and Angie, the Good Samaritan Center of St. Ansgar for their “family” care, Dr. Ross of St. Ansgar, and Dr. Tollefson of Mayo Clinic, and to everyone for their thoughts and prayers through his fight with cancer.
Dad was the foundation of our family and was happiest when with family. If anyone needed help, he was the first one to be there and was always positive about any and every situation that arose. Attending his children and grandchildren’s events and accomplishments with his wife were very important to him. His smile and always visiting with people will be remembered by anyone who met him.
