Dorothy Jean (Thrasher) Nieman
Dorothy Jean (Thrasher) Nieman, 75, of Mapleview, Minnesota, died Saturday morning, June 13, 2015, at Bethesda Hospital, St. Paul, Minnesota, of respiratory complications from polio and colon cancer.
She was born on July 2, 1939, to William and Amanda (Olson) Thrasher in Chester, Iowa. She attended District 12 Country School and graduated from Austin High School in 1958. Dorothy graduated from Austin Vocational School in 1958 for cosmetology. She worked at Margaret's Hair Salon until 1993.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Harry Otto Nieman on December 4, 1960, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, where she was a longtime member. The couple made their home in Mapleview, Minnesota, where they raised their two daughters.
Dorothy enjoyed dancing at the Terp Ballroom where she met Harry. She also enjoyed traveling, bird watching and playing cards. Dorothy loved spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. Dorothy enjoyed life and volunteering. She volunteered at St. Marks, Girl Scouts, Mapleveiw Park Board, was a Sunday School teacher, and belonged to WELCA. She was involved in Mapleview Women’s Club and an election judge for many years.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Harry of almost 55 years; two children: Deb (Jim) Nelson, Rose Creek, Minnesota, Joyce (Tom) Crowley, St. Ansgar, Iowa; three grandchildren: Kristina (Steven) Crowley-Morische, Dayton, Maine, Lacey Crowley, Kunsan Air Force Base, Korea, Shawn Crowley, St. Ansgar, Iowa; three sisters: Fern Johnson, Austin, Minnesota, Evelyn Swanson, Fridley, Minnesota, Lila Caron, Faribault, Minnesota; sister-in-law Yvonne Krumm, St. Ansgar, Iowa; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Amanda Thrasher; brothers: Mervin Thrasher, Arnold Thrasher; sister Marlene Thrasher; brothers-in-law: Melvin Helle, Chester Johnson, Floyd Caron, Roger Swanson, Clarence Krumm; nieces: Cathy Mills and Carrie Thrasher.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Minnesota, with Pastor Gerry Giese officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar, Iowa at a later date.
