Mathias Nelsen (Nilsen) Bjornhaugen was born November 14, 1841 at Ovre Noss, Biridalen, (Christians Amt) Oppland, Norway to Nils Evensen and Maren Larsdatter. He was baptized on November 28, 1841. Birth/baptismal record found at the Norwegian Digital Archives at Biri, Oppland, Norway, 1829-1842, page #85, entry # 49. Baptismal sponsors listed but hard to decipher.
Mathias married Johanne Gulbrandsen Bakkum on August 3, 1867 at Biridalen, Oppland, Norway. Marriage record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives for Biri, Oppland, Norway, 1866-1872, page #47, entry #19. (Note: Johanna's obituary says they married June 25, 1866).
The couple had six children:
Netta (b September 22, 1867 Biridalen, Oppland, Norway, married Peter Johnson Pedersen 1886, d January 16, 1923 Lake, Cerro Gordo, Iowa);
Emil Gustav (b May 8, 1874 Oppland, Norway, married Mathilde Theoline Ask 1899, d September 8, 1935 Mitchell, Iowa);
Anne Marie (b February 26, 1877 Oppland, Norway, married James Grant Cameron 1897, 2nd marriage to Gilbert Johnson Dammen, d January 18, 1921 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa);
Anna Margaret (b 1880 Rock, Mitchell, Iowa, married Jacob Fawver);
Minnie Olava (b 1881 Rock, Mitchell, Iowa, married William Seaver February 17, 1904, d December 25, 1936 Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota) and
Anton (b July 12, 1883 Rock, Mitchell, Iowa, married Randina Moen April 10, 1907, d August 3, 1963 Decorah, Winneshiek, Iowa).
Mathias, Johanna and their 3 children left Norway in May, 1877 to emigrate to America and settled on farmland in Rock, Mitchell, Iowa where the younger three children were born.
Found in the 1880 & 1885 censuses living at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: Mathias Nelson 39, Jane Nelson 35, Netty Nelson 13, Eddie Nelson 6, Mary Nelson 3, Anny Nelson 11 mos.
1885: Mathias Nelson 43, Jennie Nelson 39, Nellie Nelson 19, Edward Nelson 10, Mary Ann Nelson 7, Anna Nelson 5, Minnie Nelson 3, Anton Nelson 1.
Mathias Nelsen died June 23, 1892 on his farm at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Riverview Cemetery, Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa.
There is a memorial for him at Find a Grave #19826650.
