Loyal De Sloover

Funeral services for Loyal De Sloover of Lawler were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 13 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Marvin Salz, Rev. Peter Bodensteiner, and Rev. David Pepper officiating.

The pall was placed by his wife and children. Interment was in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Lawler. Pallbearers were: Jason Maklenburg, Jeremy Maklenburg, Jamie De Sloover, Ron Ferch, Travis Suckow, and Terry Schwickerath. Honorary pallbearers were: Jeannie Makkenburg, Shelli De Sloover, Sherri Torres, Amanda De Sloover, Angela Schwickerath, Trish Shiskov, Dana Thompson, and Sarah Cummins. Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Loyal, 84, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Loyal Valentine De Sloover was born November 28, 1920 on a farm near Riceville, the son of Victor and Katherine (Linkenmeyer) De Sloover. He was baptized at the Catholic Church in Riceville and later confirmed there. He attended country school in Riceville until he was 10 years old and the family moved to Lawler. He continued going to country school near their farm, graduating from the eighth grade and receiving his diploma from the court house in New Hampton.

Loyal continued helping his father with farming, carpenter work and with hired labor until enlisting in the Army in February of 1942. He received his training in Little Rock, AR and Orlando, FL before serving in the infantry during World War II. He received the Golden Gloves award while in the Army. He was honorably discharged as a Private 1st Class on October 25, 1945.

On February 12, 1946, he married Florence Bemis at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. Upon retiring in the fall of 1983, he continued helping his son farm.

He loved farming, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, traveling, and playing cards.

He became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center in June of 2004.

He was a member of The American Legion and Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

He is survived by his wife Florence; two sons: Larry of Waucoma and Garry of Wamego, KS; one daughter: Diane Maklenburg of New Hampton; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother: Bernard of Waucoma; and four sisters: Berneice Langreck of Waucoma, Verda Langreck of West Union, Katherine Langreck of Lawler, and Betty Tillman of Waucoma.

Loyal was preceded in death by his parents.
