Sister Irene Frein
September 21, 1918 – June 15, 2008
Sister Irene (Adorine) Frein, OSF, 89, of Holy Family Hall, Dubuque, died at 3 a.m. Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Holy Family Hall Infirmary.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Mount St. Francis Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at the chapel, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. The Miller Funeral Home, 1185 Route 35 N., East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.
Sister ministered as a homemaker in the Iowa cities of Dubuque (Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception Convent), Alton, North Buena Vista, Ossian, Monticello, Holy Cross, Sioux City (Briar Cliff College), Sugar Creek and Petersburg, and in Melrose Park, Illinois. She spent her last years visiting the elderly in Maquoketa.
She was born on September 21, 1918, in Stacyville, Iowa, daughter of Mathias and Elizabeth (Gilles) Frein.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Nov. 5, 1934, and made her final profession of vows on August 10, 1940.
Surviving are her brother, John; her sisters, Joann and Gertrude; nieces and nephews; and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared 72 years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frederick; and her sisters, Cecilia, Mary Ann, Stella, Mildred and Katherine.
