Ida Mae Pfaltzgraff, age 92, of Ankeny, Iowa, and formerly of Osage, Iowa, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Mill-Pond Presbyterian Homes and Services in Ankeny.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with Pastor Sam Mack and Pastor Rick Miller officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, Iowa. Visitation is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be directed to The American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
Ida Mae was born May 11, 1922, to Rube and Henrietta (Rewerts) Freese of Dumont, Iowa. She married Louis Pfaltzgraff on August 2, 1942, in Dumont. Ida Mae taught in a one room school house in rural Austinville and second grade in the elementary schools of Austinville, Dumont, Mitchell, and Osage. She was very fond of music and was the Drum Major of the Dumont Marching Band where they achieved the #1 ranking at the National Band Contest in Chicago.
Ida Mae attended school at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She attained her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, August 1, 1975. She attended many night classes and summer schools to attain her Bachelor’s degree, while working, teaching and raising their four sons. She has always loved children and would still get a big smile on her face when you would mention one of her great-grandchildren.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She sang in the church choir and at times played the organ. She was also a member of Citadel, Wa-Tan-Ye and Shakespearian Clubs, Sweet Adeline’s, Alpha Delta Kappa, Alpha Writers and the Retired Teachers of Mitchell County.
Ida Mae is survived by four sons, Dennis (Cathy) Pfaltzgraff of Kileen, Texas, Doug (Laveta) Pfaltzgraff of Bondurant, Iowa, David Pfaltzgraff of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Dean (Kim) Pfaltzgraff of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Damon Pfaltzgraff, Jason Pfaltzgraff, Karen Ursino, Dawn Plimmer, Brad Pfaltzgraff, Sarah Backhaus, Seth Pfaltzgraff, Jessica Schreurs, and Jenna Boswell; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Freese of Dumont, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and many friends and acquaintances.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rube and Henrietta Freese; her husband, Louis Pfaltzgraff in 1992; her grandson, Jacob Pfaltzgraff; her sister, Viola Nolte; and her two brothers, Carl Freese and Rueben Freese.
