Elisabeth (Samuels) Behrens – July 28, 1924 – August 9, 2009

Elisabeth Samuels Behrens, matriarch of the Behrens family of Bedford County, Va., left this planet on Sunday afternoon, August 9, 2009, peacefully from her home.

She was born in Osage, Iowa, on July 28, 1924, and moved to Virginia in 1954. She called Bedford County her home for almost 50 years.

Elisabeth and her husband, Glenn, raised seven children, Diane Behrens Rightmire, Jeffrey Behrens, David Behrens, Kris Behrens, N. Grace Behrens, Denise Hamilton Beckner and Mike Burns. She was preceded in death by one son, David; and one grandson, Joshua Scott.

She is survived by her husband; the six children; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Before leaving the Midwest, she worked in a munitions plant during World War II and earned her private pilot's license in her spare time. In order to keep her license current, Glenn bought a Flight School and Air Charter business (Bedford Flying Service), and she continued to fly for many years.

She retired from a fulfilling career as Export Sales Manager at Rubatex, which allowed her to travel to many places including England, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emerites.
Upon retirement, she decided she wasn't done yet, and went to work for J. Crew in Lynchburg, where she worked until her recent illness.

A remarkable, intelligent, and strong woman, Elisabeth always led her life on her terms and to the best of her ability. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the hospice of your choice.

**note: Elisabeth was the daughter of William Earl Samuels and Grace (Weaver) Samuels
