Dr. Eiel, christened Hans Edward Eiel, was born at Lake Mills, on the fourth day of February, 1876, the son of John and Olina Eiel. On the sixth day of May, 1899 he was united in marriage to Sarah B. Skuttle. Three children were born to this union, Dr. John Eiel and Dr. Merrill O. Eiel both of Osage, and Mrs. Helen Plummer of Northwood.

He spent his early years and received his elementary and high school education at Lake Mills and was confirmed in the Lutheran church at that place. He also took a business training course at Garner. He then took up the profession of teaching, which he followed for five years. This was, however, only temporary, as his ambition was to be a doctor of medicine. With this end in view he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk and later spent two years in the Keokuk Medical College from which he graduated in 1899 passing the State Board examination in 1898.

He then practiced as a doctor of medicine for a short period of time at Fertile, Iowa, later moving to Buffalo Center, where he practiced forty-three years. He has served as health officer, and was a life member of the Iowa State Medical Society and a member of the American Medical Association. He has been president and secretary of the Winnebago County Medical Association. He was a third degree Mason and a member of Nain Lodge of Buffalo Center.

He served as postmaster here, having been appointed to the office five times. He served the greater part of two terms under President Wilson and just recently received his third appointment by President Roosevelt.

His wife, Sarah B. Eiel, and three children survive him, as well as two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Colby, and Mrs. Sarah Trontvedt of Lake Mills, and five grandchildren, Robert, Keith, Jean and John Eiel of Osage, and Sarah Jean Plummer of Northwood.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, June 1, conducted by Rev. A. N. Brudvig, pastor of the Lutheran church with Rey. Alec Russell assisting, and burial was made at Lake Mills. F. Whalley, accompanied by Mrs. A. Maberry, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Lead Kindly Light." Pallbearers were Frank Murray, A. L. Olson, J. C. Koppen, Roy Leibrand, Frank Schleifer and Clarence Schendel.

Out-of-town relatives and friends were Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Colby, Mrs. Sarah Trondvedt**, Mrs. Esther Colby, Mrs. Joe Trondvedt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bliss, Mrs. Barbara Sandem and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Moen, all of Lake Mills, Mr. and Mrs. John Colby and son, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Colby of Hanlontown, Mrs. Chas.
