#2:Osage To Honor
Dr. John E. Eiel
Sunday, June 24Plans are complete for an open house reception Sunday afternoon, June 24 honoring an Osage physician, Dr. John E. Eiel, 73. The activities are planned for 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Osage marking Dr. Eiel's completing fifty years as a family doctor.
Dr. Eiel was born and grew to manhood in Buffalo Center where his father, Dr. H. E. Eiel, was a practicing physician. His brother, the late Dr. Merrill Eiel, was an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist.
Dr. John received his medical training at the University of Iowa where he was graduated with honors from the College of Medicine. Between his internship and residency he served as doctor for the Ford Motor Company in Des Moines. Dr. Eiel also spent 18 months in La Crosse, Wisconsin at St. Francis Hospital, and following this he returned to Buffalo Center to assist his father for six months.
He served as resident surgeon at City Hospital, Des Moines for one year before moving to Osage in January 1926. He practiced with Drs. Louis and Sam Savre until 1929 before establishing his own practice. In the spring of 1940 he opened his own clinic in Osage in partnership with his brother, "Dr. Merrill", who remained a partner until his death in December 1952.
Some twenty other doctors have been affiliated with the Osage Medical Group since its founding. At the present time the Medical Group is composed of Dr. Eiel, Dr. William S. Spencer, physician and surgeon; Dr. Robert Isham, obstetrics; Dr. J. W. Crossley, eye, ear, nose and throat specialist; Dr. Richard Boeke, Dr. Thomas Place and Dr. M. C. Steine.
When the new Mitchell County Memorial Hospital opened its doors in November 1951 Dr. Eiel became its first chief-of-staff. He has never bothered to count the babies that he delivered but in many Osage families he has delivered third generation infants.
Dr. John O. Eiel is affiliated with the Mitchell County Medical Society, the Iowa and national units. He served in World War I while a senior in college and belongs to American Legion Post 278; served on finance committees of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church during the time when the church was under construction, and has held various responsibilities within the church. He still attends medical meetings and seminars each year to keep up with the latest trends in the various fields of medicine. "Dr. John" was honored by the Iowa State Medical Association in April, in Des Moines, with his classmates from Medical School. His fiftieth class reunion was held Saturday, June 16 in Iowa City which he attended.
His family includes his wife, Marian (Watson) Eiel; two sons, Keith of Superior, Nebraska and Robert of Sedona, Arizona; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. W. E. Plummer of Northwood, wife of Judge Plummer, is Dr. Eiel's sister.
