Dorothy Juanita (Goodman) Plagmann Young Steinert – July 10, 1924 – August 3, 2011

Dorothy Juanita Steinert, 87, formerly of Alta and Sutherland, entered into rest on Aug. 3, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Home in Newell. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 20, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alta.

Burial of her ashes will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy was born July 10, 1924, with her identical twin sister Doris in Marshalltown, to Paul Everett Goodman and Mabel Victoria (Cory) Goodman. She grew up on a farm near Lime Springs, with sisters Doris and Alice, and brother Corwin. She graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1942 and went on to graduate from the Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1945.

On July 19, 1944, Dorothy married Lloyd Robert Plagmann at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple began farming in the Riceville area. Three children were born to their union; Dianne, Barbara, and Larry. In 1952, Lloyd lost his left leg to cancer so the couple moved to Mason City where Dorothy worked as a nurse and Lloyd became an accountant. In their years in Mason City, Dorothy was very active in the First Methodist Church, and her family's interests. Dorothy and Lloyd were divorced in 1963. Lloyd passed away in September of 1964.

On Sept. 24, 1964, Dorothy was married to Elbert Young in Cherokee. Elbert and Dorothy enjoyed music, dancing, and stock car racing with Dorothy's son Larry. Elbert passed away on March 25, 1968.

Dorothy and Waldo R. Steinert were married on May 11, 1969 and lived in Sutherland for twenty-three years. Dorothy and Wally enjoyed Elderhostel travel, volunteering for the Republican Party, doing conservation work, and gardening. Dorothy also began doing volunteer work in the elementary school. When Wally passed away in 1992, Dorothy moved to Alta.

While in Alta, Dorothy volunteered in the elementary school. For her many efforts, Dorothy received the Governor's Volunteer Award. Her other activities were serving in the United Methodist Church, being a Foster Grandparent, and assisting with costumes for the Buena Vista Community Theatre.

Other passions were beautifying her surroundings with roses and baking special wild berry pies for friends and family. People often relied on her nursing, gardening, and cooking skills where ever she lived. In her later years, Dorothy lived at Lake Pointe Villa (Storm Lake), Willoway Complex (Sutherland), and finally Wel-life (Alta) until 2007.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Mabel Goodman, husbands Lloyd Plagmann, Elbert Young, and Wally Steinert, sister-in-law Carolyn Goodman, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Ted Dieken, sister and brother-in-law Doris and Charles Patridge.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter Dianne Taylor of Omaha, Neb., daughter Barbara Patten of Storm Lake, son Larry and Mary (Porter) Plagmann of Humboldt, brother Corwin and Anita Goodman of Cresco, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Alta, the United Methodist Church of Sutherland, or the Prairie Heritage Center (4931 Yellow Ave., Peterson, IA, 51047).
