BERNARD MCCARTHY, 58,
DIED IN WASHINGTON

Funeral services for a native of this area, Bernard McCarthy, 58, were held on Monday morning at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. Mr. McCarthy died on December 31, 1970, at the University hospital in Iowa City. he had been seriously ill for two weeks. Military rites were held at the cemetery in Washington.

Bernard H. McCarthy was born on October 21, 1912, at Osage, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Allie M. Schweiger McCarthy. He was reared and educated at New Haven, Iowa.

Dorothy Wilson and Bernard McCarthy were united in marriage on September 30, 1940, in Washington and had lived there 32 years.

He was a veteran of service in the Pacific theater, and in Japan in World War II, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and had served as grand knight, was active in Boy Scout work, a member of Toastmasters International, was active in the Marine Corps League, the VFW and American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy of Washington; eight sons, four daughters; three grandsons; three brothers: Edmund of Owatonna, Thomas of McIntire and Henry Jr. of Kenosha, Wisconsin; five sisters: Mrs. Clem (Marian) Pitzen of Stacyville, Mrs. Lynn King of San Mateo, Calif., Mrs. Grace Thornton of Austin, Mrs. Wade Detrick of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Frank Gallagher of Daylestown, Pennsylvania.
