Joe was born on January 15, 1943, in Osage, Iowa, to Adolph and Jean (Adams) Schwab. Joe had two brothers (his best friends) David (Kathleen) and Bob (Audrey) as well as sisters Pat and Sandra. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1962 and joined the Marine Corps. Joe served in the Vietnam War. He returned to St. Ansgar as a proud veteran and graduated from Waterloo Barber School in Waterloo, Iowa. Joe was a supervisor at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvedere, Illinois. He also owned and ran JP’s Barber Shop for many years and continued to cut hair until two months prior to his death.

He was an active member of many organizations including a lifetime member of Osage V.F.W. Post 7920, Marine Corps Association, St. Ansgar American Legion Post 358, lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 790, Knights of Columbus 3rd degree member of Council 4308, Disabled American Veterans, and Marine Corps Association and Foundation.

Joe was also a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Osage. Joe was married to Marilyn Gragert on June 2, 2000, in Charles City, Iowa. Joe enjoyed spending every moment with the love of his life, his Honey Bunches, Marilyn, whether it was traveling to Las Vegas or enjoying their back patio with a glass of wine and friends. Although they enjoyed only 16 years of companionship, they acted as newlyweds every day. He had many loves in his life, including his beloved Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed farming with Monty and Terry and keeping a very meticulous yard and garden. He spent time doing carpentry and socializing through his profession of being a barber. Joe’s blue eyes always twinkled for his three little granddaughters, Sydney, Alexa, and Lila.

Joe was greeted in heaven by his parents, Adolph and Jean Schwab as well as his nephew, Ron Rodemaker.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, and five children: Anita Schwab, Jill Schwab, John Paul (Kristi) Jones, Matthew (Valerie) Jones, and Lucas (Meleah) Jones, as well as five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to the VA Clinic Staff of Mason City for all of your “Hi Joe!”s and love and support of Marilyn. Additional thanks go to Hospice nurse Angela, Dr. Weissinger, Sue Porter, Mark the oxygen guy, Dr. Vemula and nurse Kelsey from the Cancer Center, Dr. Ross and staff, Dr. Tesar, Lisa and Father Neil of Epiphany Parish.

Goodbye dear friends: Dudley, Carol, Glenda, Rhea, Schurtzi, Jim Johns, John Lacoste, Jim Butler, Mike Woodhouse and next-door neighbor Ron. Semper Fi, David and Anchors Away, Bob. Girls, I love you, Anita and Jill. John, Matt and Luke- keep my football chair warm. I will love you forever and ever, my wife, Marilyn.
