Luella Alice (Starr) Whirry – October 23, 1869 – April 16, 1896
DEATH OF MRS. J. E. WHIRRY
On last Thursday afternoon, Mrs. J. E. Whirry, after a long and painful illness, borne with patience and fortitude, passed quietly away surrounded by those she loved. Her health, which had been gradually failing for the last year or two, became so impaired last fall that she was sent to Colorado thinking the climate of that country would be able to accomplish what medicine had failed to do, but it was not to be, and so she returned to her loved ones, to live or die as God willed.
Mrs. Whirry’s maiden name was Luella Alice Starr; she was born in Jones County, Iowa, October 23, 1869 and moved with her parents to Osage in the fall of 1888, where she has ever since resided.
She was married to Professor J. E. Whirry, June 11, 1891 to whom she has borne two little girls, Essie and Eva. Mrs. Whirry was converted when quite young, and in the summer of 1887 was baptized and united with the Baptist Church in which she has ever since been an earnest and efficient member. She was a true friend, a loving wife, and a devoted mother. Her presence brought naught but sunshine, for she had a smile and a pleasant word for everybody. Her life, though brief was not lived in vain, for her gentle spirit and lovely Christian character was an inspiration to all who came in contact with her.
The funeral was from the Baptist church Saturday at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. Wilcox. The students of the C.V.S attended in a body. The service was largely attended and very impressive. Floral offerings from the students and other loving friends were beautiful
