OBITUARIES#1:
Ole E. Hylden, 1881-1957, Walsh County, North Dakota.
Two Grafton men killed in car accident Sunday: Walsh county recorded its eighth and ninth highway fatalities of the year early Sunday morning when two staff members of the Grafton State School were instantly killed in a single car accident just south of Grafton on highway 81. Dead are Ole E. Hylden, 76, a veteran employee of the state school and Dr. Bela E. Kiraly, 56, who joined the medical staff at the school about six months ago. The accident took place at about 3:30 Sunday morning as the two men were returning home from the annual open state chess tournament being played at Grand Forks.
The car, driven by Mr. Hylden, left the highway on the curve just south of the city and plunged into the ditch on the east side of the road. The vehicle continued forward in the ditch, struck and hurdled an approach to the highway and came to rest on its four wheels in the ditch.
Dr. Kiraly was thrown against the dashboard of the car, with severe head injuries apparently causing his death. Mr. Hylden was thrown against the steering wheel and apparently suffered a crushed chest. Both were dead when an ambulance arrived. Gerald Jackson of the Grafton police department saw the accident occur from a distance. The officer, patrolling the streets in the police car, was driving east on highway 17 and saw the car, approaching from the south, leave the highway as it plunged into the ditch.
When Jackson reached the scene, another motorist, coming from the south, had also stopped to render aid. The Grafton officer then called Highway Patrolman Duane Bergan and summoned an ambulance. Both Mr. Hylden and Dr. Kiraly were ardent chess enthusiasts. Dr. Kiraly was one of three players who had survived the second round of play without defeat at the state tournament.
Sunday's fatal accident took place only a short distance from the spot where three Minnesota teen-age girls were killed in an accident last August. The death of the girls began the series of deaths which brought Walsh county's fatality record to nine with the death of two Grafton men Sunday morning.
Ole E. Hylden was born February 13, 1881 at St. Ansgar, Iowa, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mikkel Hylden, early pioneers of Walsh county. The parents homesteaded near Park River that same year. Mr. Hylden came to Grafton in 1925, where he served as a deputy sheriff. Since that time he had been employed by the Grafton State School. He was married at Winona, Aug. 4, 1934, to Etta Hoge, who survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Lars Hylden of Thief River Falls, MN and Adolph Hylden of Fargo, ND; and a sister, Mrs. Hannah Anderson of Bell Gardens, CA.
