A Celebration of Life Service for Douglas Keith Walker, of Greene, will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Jennifer Suyman officiating.
Private burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville following the luncheon.Douglas Keith Walker, 92, the youngest of six children of Dr. Thomas S. and Jessie (Farnham) Walker of Riceville, Iowa was born December 29, 1920 and passed away September 28, 2013 at his daughter’s home in Greene, Iowa. He graduated from Riceville High School.
On June 11, 1941 Doug was united in marriage with Esther Clausen in David, Iowa. They lived in Riceville where he farmed, then moved to Charles City where he continued to sell Moorman Feed. In 1964, they moved to Greene, Iowa where they owned the Walker Hardware Store until retirement in 1985. They lived in their lake home in Emily, Minnesota, during the summer and in Apache Junction, AZ during the winter months. They had five children and were very active in all of their lives. Family was very important to both of them. They would have celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary, but Esther died unexpectedly on June 4, 2007.
Doug was a kind, caring, wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was adventuresome and enjoyed life to the fullest with a twinkle in his eye. He and Esther traveled to Alaska, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean. They enjoyed fishing and golfing together and seeing the sights. Doug also liked to hunt and harvested a number of deer, turkey and pheasants over the years. He loved to fish and made many family trips to Canada for walleyes ands shore lunches. Doug and Esther enjoyed square-dancing and playing bridge with friends. Doug was also creative by weaving animals and birds into lawn chair backs, making wind chimes and board games. He never tired of paying cards and games with family. His passion, however, was golfing. He golfed all of his life and could still beat most everyone he played with even at the age of 92! He was an honest man with a warm heart and had friends too numerous to count.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; his brothers: Dr. Thomas G. (Lou) Walker; Donald Walker; Robert (Marguerite) Walker; sister Margaret (John) McGrath; brother-in-law: Bernard Eyestone.
He is survived by his children and their families: son Carl Keith (Janet) Walker, Emily, Minnesota, Bruce (Shannon) Walker, Brian (Dana), Nathan and Bryanna Walker, Red Wing, Minnesota; son Kevin (Mary), Dougy Walker, Ankeny, Iowa; son Harold Thomas (Mikie) Walker, Emily, Minnesota; Brandy Walker, Jack and Thomas Wagner, Huxley, Iowa, Kris Walker and Noah Vinal, Omaha, Nebraska; daughter Esther Lea (John) Backer, Greene, John (Jody) Backer of Sioux City, Elizabeth Backer, Peoria, Illinois; Teresa (Jason) Jaxon and Lea Thompson, Denver, Colorado; daughter: Marilyn (Bruce) Sigler, Pine River, Minnesota, Kori (Chris) Haverstick, Centralia, Missouri; daughter Cheryl (Duane), Mark and Timothy Brinkman, Elkhart, Iowa, one sister, Jessie Eyestone, Magnolia, Texas, and sisters-in-law: Beth Walker, St. Paul, Minnesota; Jean Clausen, Charles City, Iowa and Mary Weed of Taylorville, Illinois.
Doug’s family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation for your presence here today and invites you to join them in the Lutheran Church for a light lunch and fellowship after the service. There will be a graveside service for the family at the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville, Iowa after the luncheon.
