Elmer Ketelsen, 79, of Osage, died Monday (Sept. 25, 1989) at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital, Osage, of natural causes.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys; a daughter, Daisie Ann Olsen of rural Osage; a son, Dale of Baton Rouge, La.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilma Snyder of Osage, and Lorraine Brush of Courer D'Alene, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dean; a daughter, Dixie; a granddaughter; a brother; and a sister.
Mr. Ketelsen was a retired farmer.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage; burial in Osage Cemetery; Champion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

#3 NOTES:Elmer August Ketelsen was born November 5, 1909 near Clutier, Tama, Iowa to Anna Maria Arp and August Jurgen Ketelsen, the fourth of their five children.
His family moved by train from Tama County, Iowa to a farm in Burr Oak in 1911.
Found in the 1910 census at Oneida, Tama, Iowa: August Jurgen Ketelesen 38, Annie Arp Ketelsen 34, Henry Ketelsen 11, Wilma Ketelsen 10, Mary Ketelsen 7, Elmer Ketelsen 6 mos, Charlie Hansen 28.
Elmer attended country school at Burr Oak township until 8th grade and attended high school in Osage, Iowa. He met Gladys Ivey Olsen in St Ansgar, Iowa and they dated about three years before they were married March 23, 1930 at First Lutheran, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa by the Rev. Olaf A Langehough. Their attendants were Lloyd Brandt (Elmer's friend and Alice Mahlum (Gladys' cousin). The couple lived on the Ketelsen farm at Burr Oak township during the depression, a rough time. They raised farm animals, crops and gardens and went from using horses to tractors.
They had 4 children who were all born at the Nissen hospital in Osage: Dixie, Daisie, Dean and Dale.

1920: August J Ketelsen 47, Annie Ketelsen 44, Henry Ketelsen 20, Wilma Ketelsen 19, Mary Ketelsen 17, Elmer Ketelsen 10, Lorraine Ketelsen 2 yrs 9 mos.
1930: August Kettelson 58, Anna Kettelson 55, Lorraine Kettelson 12, Elmer Kettelson 21, Gladys Kettelson 22.
1940: Elmer A Ketelsen 30, Gladys I Ketelsen 33, Dixie Lee Ketelsen 9, Daisy Ann Ketelsen 8, Dean E Ketelsen 7, Dale G Ketelsen 4.In 1965, Elmer sold the farm to LaVerne Funk and the family moved to Gladys' father's (Chris Olsen) farm near Stacyville, Iowa. They lived at this place with Gladys' sister, Gail Olsen. Elmer had heart problems, so in 1978, they decided to have a farm auction and move to Osage, Iowa where they bought a ranch house on State Street. Elmer & Gladys enjoyed their friends, family and following sports activities. Elmer played softball when he was younger and the couple attended square dances and played cards. He LOVED Ford pick-ups and Farmall tractors and remembering his heritage. They traveled to Idaho in 1949 and to Illinois, Louisiana and Wisconsin various times to visit relatives. He was a kind hearted and generous man who worked hard his entire life.
Elmer Ketelsen died September 25, 1989 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa, age 79 years, 10 months and 20 days. His funeral was held September 28, 1989 at Our Savior's Lutheran in Osage and he was buried at the Osage City Cemetery.
