Philip Robert Biederman, age 56, of Osage, died Thursday, September 5, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Mitchell, Iowa. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Phil was born February 22, 1957, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Robert and Jean (Mathre) Biederman. He was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. In 1975, Phil graduated from Osage High School, where he was president of the Osage FFA. Following in his parents’ and grandparents’ footsteps, he graduated from Iowa State University in 1984 with a B.S. degree in agriculture.

On August 24, 1985, Phil married Marjean Hofmeister at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Ackley, Iowa. To this union, four sons were born: Andrew Philip, Timothy William, Thomas David and Matthew Steven. Phil was an enthusiastic follower of all of his sons’ activities and was very supportive of Marjean when she returned to her teaching career. Phil farmed with his father and brother and continued farming after their passings.

He was also employed as a certified welder at GMT Corporation in Nashua. Phil was a proud member of NFO, the Mitchell County Historical Society, and was a dedicated blood donor. Phil was a firm believer in alternative energy. In earlier years, Phil was a Sunday school teacher and was on various boards at the First United Methodist Church in Osage. He was currently an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he was a past president of the congregation, served on numerous committees, and taught Sunday school with Marjean.

Phil is survived by his wife, Marjean Biederman of Osage; his sons, Andrew Biederman, a graduate of Wartburg College and currently a student at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Timothy Biederman and fiancée, Emily Brandt, both students at UNI in Cedar Falls, Thomas Biederman, a student at Wartburg College in Waverly, and Matthew Biederman, a senior at Osage High School; his mother, Jean (Mathre) Biederman of Osage; his sister, Jane (Kenneth) Odland of Newton; and numerous other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Biederman in 1979; and his brother, David Biederman in 1984.
