Dorothy Elizabeth Streit, 91, of Stacyville, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013, at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
Dorothy was born December 6, 1921, in Stacyville to Frank and Anna (Gerber) Falk. She attended Visitation Catholic School. After graduation she worked at the cafeteria at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, and did child care for a doctor’s family in Waterloo.
She married Aloysius Meek on June 10, 1941, and they lived in Baltimore, Maryland. They were living in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1944, when her husband was drafted into the military. She remained there and worked as a riveter and instructor on airplanes during World War II. When her husband returned from the war they lived in Nebraska, until 1948, when they purchased a farm south of Stacyville. She lived there with her husband until his death in 1951. She, and her two sons, remained in Stacyville with family.
She married Leo Streit on May 1, 1954, and they lived on the Streit family farm north of Stacyville. They were blessed with five more sons and lived on the home farm for 58 years. She enjoyed farm life staying busy gardening and cooking for her boys and family. The family fondly remembers her five-layer casserole dish, whole wheat bread and her “Pride of Iowa” oatmeal cookies. She also enjoyed reading, their card club and her Catholic faith.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, a loving mother who was very proud of her sons and their accomplishments. She especially loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. After Leo’s passing in February, Dorothy remained on the farm for two months before moving to the Stacyville Nursing Home in April.
Dorothy is survived by her sons Bob (Greta) Meek, Nick (Sue) Streit, Tom (Linda) Streit, Paul (Linda) Streit, Ted (Diane) Streit; daughter-in-law Becky Meek; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother Ernie Falk; sister-in-laws Therese Johnson and Bonita Streit; brother-in-law, Clem Wolf; many nieces and nephews and friends.

The family wishes to thank Vera Koehn for her dedication and care she gave Dorothy and Leo during the last few years of their lives. A special thanks to any family members who helped with mothers care. The family would like to also thank the staff of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home and Hospice of North Iowa for their compassionate care.
