Evelyn was born on January 9, 1924, in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to Edmund and Ella (Kirchgatter) Rosenberg. She attended rural school completing the eighth grade. As a young girl she worked on the farm, shocking oats and milking cows were among here duties. She also could be found singing, dancing and tap dancing to the accompaniment of guitar music by her brother Glen at various local community gatherings.

As a young lady she worked for a short time in Mason City at Decker’s meat packers and as an unsuccessful waitress and also was a hairstylist in her home. Evelyn was an old-fashioned gal who met and married Leonard Fox on April 29, 1943.
