Osage, Iowa — George Joseph Taets, age 82, of Osage, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

George was born on a farm south of St. Ansgar on August 10, 1930, to Camiel “Mell” Taets and Ida (Boerjan) Taets.

He graduated from Osage Community High School in 1948. In 1949, he enlisted in the Navy where he served as a medic during the Korean Conflict. His tour included time on board medical ships off the coast of Korea, and in the Naval Hospitals in Guam and Key West.

George returned to Osage following his military service to farm with his brother, Russell. On July 7, 1956, he married Kay Tracy and moved to a farm west of Osage where they raised six children. He farmed until he retired in 1995. He served on numerous community boards including the Osage Co-op Elevator, Osage Co-op Oil Company, 4-H Leader, Pork Producers and Cattlemen’s Association. He was also a member of the Osage American Legion and V.F.W. George was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Osage throughout his entire life. His favorite charity was Food for the Poor.

George was a self-employed, independent and humble man who believed in God, loved his family and served his country. He was a fisherman in every sense of the word and loved spending time in the summer fishing with his grandchildren. He valued his friends and enjoyed the time he spent with them playing bridge, fishing or just talking farming. He led by example and was proud to be an American farmer whose generation developed the production practices that enabled them not only to better support their families but to feed the world.

George is survived by his wife, Kay Taets of Osage; children, Mike (Kim) Taets of Basalt, Colorado, Mary (Todd) Edgar of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, John (Doris) Taets of Fort Dodge, Joe (Julie) Taets of Decatur, Illinois, and Jeff (Londa) Taets of Grand Junction, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Halverson of Stacyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mell A. Taets in 2012; brother, Russell Taets; an infant brother, Francis; and sister, Florence Flynn.
